I'm assuming this has already been discussed a hundred times over, but I was wondering whether DDMail was a feature that was being developed, and if so, is there an estimated time of arrival (not precise, just a broad estimate) for it? I realise this may be a repost, so I apologise for that if it is.

Np. It is not being actively developed but it is being actively thought about in terms of two different possibilities:

A forwarding service.
Partnering with provider(s) to offer co-branded service.

Each has its issues. The first one trying to scope out resource needs like how much spam we'd have to deal with.

The second the issue is a partner that people actually like. Unfortunately there aren't many good Gmail alternatives.

Actually there is an email service gmail alternative it is called Roundcube

Roundcube is an email client, not a provider. It's a good client all the same though.

If we created a forwarding address, you could use Roundcube or anything else, but you'd still need a provider to store the messages.

Another possible mail service to look into is mail4us.net
Small-ish storage limit, but that's not a problem for me at least. (and you can always back up emails locally)
It does use roundcube for webmail too

In my opinion, small-ish storage limit would be an issue. Gmail has spoiled us, now everyone wants huge email storage space, otherwise very few people will use it as primary email account.

I would suggest going with forwarder, instead of small space (if you can provide large storage space, that is different). With forwarder, I can set it up with Gmail (I think livemail/hotmail also supports it), and not worry about space, while also using it as my primary email address.

I agree, and the more I think about this (and evaluate and throw out providers for various reasons), I think forwarding is the way to go. Now, if we do forward (as opposed to just partner), we're taking on some responsibility/resources, so that needs to be evaluated, i.e. spam filtering and the like.

Is hosting not being considered at all? Although I realise it would require a serious amount of resources (time, money, and energy), would that not be the best way to ensure that the privacy policy is met to the fullest extent? Also, not having to rely on external hosts would be better for DDG in the long run, in case one of those hosts changes/decides to stop. If DDG were to become a huge, Google-like corporation (as we all hope it will, except without the whole "evil" thing going on), then partnering would be obsolete, and the shift would have to be made in any case.
