DDG, like half of all the search engines out there does NOT give the number of results found.

When I am searching for something that I want an easy instant answer to, it doesn't matter. It matters very much when I am researching something which is usually the case. This really is a problem for me and I'm quite sure I'm not alone. This sentence has been deleted because of the use of profanity.

Other than cost, is there any other reason out there for not letting a searcher know how many results he got? This is a serious question and I'm very close to deleting all of the ones than do NOT give me the number of results as I have no need for them at all.

So sad that DDG does NOT give me the number of results. It's so great and it's SSL too!

Sorry to hear that you're upset that DuckDuckGo doesn't display the number of search results found. However, I believe Yegg chose not to display the number of search results found to reduce clutter on the page, and not because of cost issues.

You can get a rough approximation of the number of search results for a query by using another search engine like Google (!g), Bing (!b), or Yahoo (!y) and then using DuckDuckGo if the query has a large enough number of results.

I'm not the OP but your solution hardly is one. If you have to use another search engine to look up the number of results first, why would you head over to DDG and do the search again? That doesn't make any sense.

I'd like to see the number of results in DDG too.

BTW, is it just me or is DDG broken right now? I don't get any results, just the start page again.

I didn't mean for my suggestion to be seen as a long-term solution to the problem - it was more of a temporary fix for the meantime.

I'm not seeing any issue with DuckDuckGo at the moment in Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. I've had that issue before though.

I would like to see the number of results, too.

I think it is difficult for DDG to show the number of results because it gets its results from different sources, so it must be hard to give a total number. Maybe the API from Bing / Yahoo / etc doesn't let you know how many total results you got?

Anyway, if something like this is the case, I think that showing the total number of results got from only one of the main search engines being used would be enough (i.e. from bing or yahoo). Because I think that we want just an approximate, not an 100% exact number.

Because of the way we get results, we do not have an accurate count by any means.

i believed it's the result of how DDG acquire data from another sources and the way it displays results in pageless manner. a realtime data source might returns different total each time.
