Hmm... They are both very good options... I would probably have to say that I would like the option to dress up your duck just because it displays a little bit more personality and variation. But I would not be disappointed to see the different color logos, if that option is more popular. 

I say change the logo color, dressing up your duck (even though it's a very cool idea) just seems weird to me.

I once added a bg pic to Google, but never think of it until I  sometimes go to their home / search  page after being logged in to  Gmail.
   I am online a LOT  but still, being able to dress up the duck, as fun as it might be,  is for sure a non issue to me, but unlike many people it seems,  I have always preferred utilitarian,  or useful traits over ascetically pleasing, and besides I think the existing Duck   page looks cool :-)

Dressing the duck is just weird. Background changes sound cool.

I think that dressing the duck would be a unique feature but implementation may be difficult.

I like the color changing logo option better.

I would still like to see some of the more unique custom logo’s be an option, as well (i.e. pchammer’s gold and silver logos).  These were cool!

I like the idea, however, I think it may become very limited and there will be only so much you can do with the duck for dress up.

 Also ... eg.. Google, when you sign in, your settings are there, even if you delete your cookies, etc...  I think if someone dresses their duck, cleans history and such, they will lose everything they do which in turn may not be so appealing.

If you could sign into DDG search and keep settings, that may make the dress up idea better. If it was a full duck, not just the head, I would think it to be even better but just being the head, in my opinion, it's better to keep simple color changing.

But of course if you do decide otherwise, just ask, I'll help.
