Make the custom search box capture the cursor

First I would like to say thanks for DDG and the community behind.

I've followed the guide here:
https://duckduckgo.com/search_box.html

The search box works really well on the webpage served by localhost I built it in to, but it would be really great if the cursor could be captured somehow, by the search box when the page is loaded just like at duckduckgo.go

I didn't seem to be able to find any information on the subject, so I don't hope this question have been asked before (or is to obvious).

What do you mean by capture the cursor?

Do you mean when you hover over the search box the cursor changes into a text edit cursor?

In the title you mentioned that you wanted it in the custom search bar. This would be an inconvenience if you loaded a blog and wanted to scroll down the page, and found that your cursor was stuck in a search box.

Instead, as soon as you started typing it would put the mouse in the search bar.

The page I have built the search bar into, only consists of a few links (~20) and the search bar itself. It's then served by apache2 on my localhost. All in all it is only filling out half a page, so scrolling is not a problem.

But otherwise you are right, if the cursor is captured and some scrolling is needed then problems would follow.

No, I mean when I open a page containing the custom search box I would like it to capture the cursor so I can start searching without clicking on the text-field first. The reason for this is I (almost) always search for something, and just like at duckduckgo.com it would be nice if I could start typing as soon as page is loaded.

This might be a web-programming thing, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere, including in HTML and PHP. Besides, when the answer is found, I thought it could be cool to include the needed code in the help page for the custom search bar (I can't be the only one missing this function ;) )

OK, now I get it. That is a good idea.

If you add a duckduckgo search bar add-on, you can search through that.

I am afraid there is no way how to focus an input in an iframe which tries to load content which is not on the same domain. Trying that would seem to be a security violation from the browser's side.

If you however use the banner version you can focus on the input by using javascript focus function.
