Hi,
I'm having a good time using Duck Duck Go, however I noticed that Safe Search's filtering doesn't work as it should.
For example, I was searching for Dick Hyman, the Jazz pianist, right? Well, DDG actually omitted the word "Dick" because of Safe Search.
I understand you are probably working on the algorithm, however filtering legit words off just because they could be (or could be not, in my case) swear words is cheap, pointless and unnecessarily puritan.
If I search for "Dick Hyman", I mean it. Why should you remove his name from my query? His name is Dick, short for Richard. I look for a man called Dick, I actually typed that. What good would it do to remove it from my search?
Instead of removing keywords, Safe Search should focus on removing pornographic pages from the results. There's a difference between "Dick Hyman" and "Dick Hymen" and a good search engine should be able to perfectly differentiate the one from the other, without crossing the results. Filter the results by domain or something.
Also, another request: can you guys work a little on removing the malware sites? I use Linux so it's not really a problem to me but regular searches often returned sites containing the words "warez", "keygen", "preteen" (mostly faux-queries, like
http://www.maliciousite.domain/?fakequery=random+bad+keyboard) and a lot of other bad stuff, all when Safe Search was ON and I was looking for info about movies, books or programming APIs. Those pages should be tagged as harmful and be removed from the results
entirely. These are the worst problems I encountered using DDG, otherwise a great engine. I hope I'm not being too harsh or demanding but even if I am, it's just for DDG's sake. These problems are really annoying and in my opinion could scare off a lot of potential users. Keep up the good work.
