I have an idea for a reddit promotion, and I'd love your feedback on it.

We've done reddit advertising in the past, and I think there is a good match up with their user base (including myself!). We were actually in the beta ad program, and it worked great back then. On last try, it has worked a lot less well as I think the ads have become less novelty/more ignorable or something.

Anyway, onto the new idea:

We sponsor a contest to give away a bunch of reddit gold memberships: http://www.reddit.com/help/gold.
If someone gets a membership they also get a DDG gold badge (some form of the monicle duck).
I'm not sure what the contest would be but something involving being an avid user of DDG. Maybe people who have spread it to a bunch of people in interesting ways. Yes, they can lie, but we select among all the applicants the one that have the best stories and that seem real/plausible. Perhaps we can do it in conjunction with the street team stuff and have them take pictures?
We also promote it on reddit via both the top advertising and the sidebar. That's expensive (especially side bar ad) but I think worth it if we get a lot of reddit exposure and people really invested in spreading DDG.

Thoughts?

I think most reddit folk already know of the DDG. It's more of the mainstream that are not aware. Trying to capture that audience is another story. The reddit idea will bring in more people and hits though...

Reddit has grown a ton. When we're mentioned on threads you can tell most haven't heard of it.

I think it's a good idea; something more along the lines of promoting DDG via this contest (or promotion) would keep them interested longer. Just like replaceawordinafamousquotewithduck, only for reddit. :D

I think that the best suited userbase would be members of Anti-Forensics.com or Tor users in General. If you can get either of those two things going (though the first one is pretty low-hit, if I remember correctly), you will get a ton of loyal users. Maybe try something with the EFF, and interview of some kind, or try to get mentioned on their site (ads on EFF.com ?)

As the founder of the current anti-forensics website I can tell you that it does receive respectable traffic now. However, once advertising contracts ran out I ended up removing user ads and all other forms of advertising.

I don't plan on implementing any advertising in the future but I will link to certain things and important topics.

I am not adverse to cooperating on projects where the traffic may be beneficial to multiple webmasters. Such as organizing fund-raising for important Internet, anonymity, or free speech projects.

I'm not sure about advertising on /r/search. It seems to be more focused on Reddit's site search than search engines in general.

Some other possible choices:

/r/technology
/r/bing
/r/yahoo
/r/privacy
/r/netsec
