I'm proposing a shortened link such as duckduckgo.com/irc for the freenode webchat link: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=duckduckgo

This way people can give an easy to remember link to other who might wish to participate in the irc chatroom.

Ideas:

duckduckgo.com/irc

ddg.gg/irc

Open to suggestions but I think it would be somewhat useful--I hope.

Some mockups, considering irc is a pretty big sphere on the web it may be good to target them for exposure as well.

Yeah, I like that. The ddg.gg URL shortner project isn't up yet, but that would make a lot of sense once it is.
