We're sorry, but something went wrong.
We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly.
Hello
everyone,
I'm new here but I've been using DuckDuckGo for a while now, and I love it!
I really would like to help spread the word about DuckDuckGo in France (I'm
French) and having it translated into French is obviously the first step!
So I've been looking for a way to translate the site, as well as the related
pages (donttrack.us, dontbubble.us, etc.) and I’ve looked on Dakwak, but
frankly the process is a bit fastidious.
I realize this must be the easiest way for you to manage all the submissions,
but for us who are trying to make DuckDuckGo as clear as possible for our
fellow countrymen and women, it is hard to be sure that we are conveying the
right meaning. Translating bits and pieces out of their original context can be
really tricky and I’m afraid some mistakes can be made. And for what I've seen on Dakwak, mistakes are likely to be made.
So do you guys think we could find a way to help you better and avoid mistranslations?
Thanks
Hi Waheed,
Given the importance of context in a translation, I think you can’t translate pieces of sentences out of their original context. Obviously some words and expressions have sometimes two (or more) different meanings, depending on what the author wants to convey. And Dakwak mainly displays pieces of sentences, which makes it difficult to understand where they come from and how they should be translated. In my opinion, displaying the full sentences or event the full text (when relevant of course) would be of some help, because as it is now, one has to go back and forth from one site (Dakwak) to the other (DuckDuckGo) to be able to translate properly. Which makes the whole thing kind of annoying.
One particular problem I have encountered while trying to modify the donttrack.us page: I tried to modify a whole sentence including a link. But modifying the whole structure of the sentence would have meant modifying the part corresponding to the link, which I couldn’t do. So being able to translate the full sentence and then to place the link on the right words would be very helpful.
As for the utility of translating DuckDuckGo, I believe in the importance of making it as clear as possible for everyone if we want it to succeed outside English speaking countries. For example the Privacy page (as well as donttrack.us and dontbubble.us) is in my opinion essential to convince people of the importance of privacy on the Web, and thus of the utility of DuckDuckGo. I think this page among others needs a proper translation to reach people. Maybe a good way of making it happen would be to have it translated by a dedicated translator or group of translators. I am of course ready to help to the full extent of my abilities, so please feel free to ask! :)
