I read DDG described as the search engine for Geeks. True or not, I’ve been thinking about the long term commercial viability of DDG. DDG seems to be coming into its own, usage continues to increase and privacy seems to be gaining some speed but is this enough? By nature people are resistant to change and the average user out there likes what they like and typically this is what they are used to.

I know DDG is different but to be commercially viable I wonder if giving the appearance of not so different, all the while remaining different, might make it more widely accepted. I came up with this version of the DDG homepage to make my point. People are used to search engines that offer common search tabs (i.e. Web, Images, Video, etc.). So what if DDG gave them this feature and also made “!Bang” more prominent (see below). When the  “!Bang” tab is selected the “!Bang” dropdown would popup.
