Things to look out for:

Trello board for open source goodie requests

Right now when we get requests for new open source goodies, we've been adding them to a text file within the appropriate repository in our github account: https://github.com/duckduckgo/. This has worked OK in that it is easy to link to and see the list. However, it isn't easy to edit, comment or vote on it.

Yesterday I saw that Trello was using their own product to organize such requests: https://trello.com/board/trello-development/4d5ea62fd76aa1136000000c

I wondered if we would benefit greatly from the same and so I mocked up what this would look like by transferring all the current requests over to this new DuckDuckGo Goodies board: https://trello.com/board/goodies/4f08e96d947729b526070890

With this method, anyone can vote or comment on the requests. All the requests (across multiple repositories) are in one place and labeled -- you can filter down to just one of them using the right menu. Additionally, you can see the status of various requests (based on the column).

What do you think of this approach?

FOSS 2011 donation nominations

Like last year, we're donating 10% of 2011 gross revenue to FOSS related projects. The final numbers aren't in, but it should be a much more substantial number this time (on the order of $10K).

Also like last year, half of it will be directed by the company and half of it will be directed by you, the DuckDuckGo community. Last time we ended up doing a theme of security and privacy, which we could re-do or go in another direction.

In any case, we'd love your nominations and suggestions. There were some already made on the other thread, which I'm re-printing here:

How about ReactOS? It's an open source operating system that aims to be binary-compatible with Windows. Sadly, due to lack of funds, they haven't gotten as far as they'd like to.
I would like to nominate Diaspora* http://diasporafoundation.org

I nominate the Tor Project again this year because of stuff like this 28c3 talk. If "no" because they got kickbacks last year (or because they get some substantial support from the U.S.A. State Dept and other spooks) then I nominate The I2P Project which is a competing network that hasn't gotten the press attention or cash/code contribution that Tor receives. I still believe Tor is the "right" choice. Only offer an alternative should they not be allowed back to back funding two years in a row.

This is particularly important because people are risking their lives and being killed out there for using the network to retrieve and disseminate information. That's what search engines are all about. Information.

Aside from The Network™, client-side document security/privacy is important too. So I also nominateTrueCrypt because they pretty much solved this problem (and then some!) and they are doing it gratis. (Plus they didn't get any cash last year ;)

Maybe a Mod (im looking at you green since you bumped it ;) should fork this thread and move the posts from this year into that one lest this one's size becomes unruly.

The reddit DuckDuckGo Challenge was great! There were a lot of great "valiant efforts" made to spread DDG. A number were rewarded with T-shirts and the overall winner is....

goombatrol for this comment on how to change your hosts file to redirect other search engine traffic to DuckDuckGo. This comment was also deemed the most creative effort.

This creativity also helped solve another problem, which is that it is hard to use DuckDuckGo in Safari because it doesn't let you customize its search engine bar.

With help from David and duck.co we created official directions for how to set this up. David also made an unofficial Mac app to help the process, which is referenced in those directions.

We're going to put together a sticker store so people can by them one-off and also get other stickers than the ones we've been giving away.

It will be modeled after the reddit sticker store: http://www.stickermule.com/reddit

The question is what stickers should we sell there? It could be anything, i.e. http://duckduckgo.com/logos.html

I was thinking at least:
- Regular sticker
- Regular sticker small
- Words horizontal (for like cars)
- iPhone skin

Better way to organize goodies?

Our goodies pages are a bit out of control.

I have an idea to simplify these goodie pages and deliver a set of goodie explanations per type of person, e.g. developer/designer/foodie/etc. So you'd come in and say I'm a foodie and then click on an icon and then be taken to the goodies that pertain to that type.

For each of those types, I envision a duck logo that pertains to it.

Also type/logo ideas welcome. When I look at them I see these immediately:
- Development
- Design
- Sysadmin
- Food
- Math & Science
- Finance
- Geography
- Words
- Local
- Games
- Facts
- Social
What do you think of this idea?

We're planning on a Reddit challenge starting this week (Wed) and running for two weeks. The ultimate goal is to get as many people to try out DuckDuckGo as possible. The subordinate goals are:
1. Get exposure to more Redditors, who we think generally would appreciate DuckDuckGo.
2. Get DDGers to spread it more effectively to the world.
3. Learn about how to effectively run a promotion like this one.
4. Discover ways to effectively spread DDG.
With these goals in mind, the following is the current draft of the challenge directions, which will eventually be posted at /r/duckduckgo and promoted across Reddit. All feedback is welcome (however big/small/harsh/whatever). It's already gone through several iterations (some of them with drastic changes to the structure of the challenge).

The challenge: Try DuckDuckGo for a week -- as your primary search engine.
Whaaattt, really!?!? Yes, change your browser default now (directions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Android, Internet Explorer, Omniweb, Epiphany, Conkeror).

Why, you ask? Because of real privacy (we don’t track you or put you in a filter bubble), lots of goodies, less spam/clutter, a cool logo, and gosh darnit, our founder is a redditor.

If you take the DuckDuckGo challenge and it sticks, please help us spread DuckDuckGo to the world and get rewarded with something every DDG redditor should want...drum roll...reddit gold!
Here’s how:
1. Make a “valiant effort” to get a bunch of people to switch to DuckDuckGo by doing one of these things (or something more creative).
2. Post a link or photo of your effort(s). (If online, you could take screen shots.)

- 100 2-month reddit gold subscriptions for your “valiant efforts.” If there are more than 100 entrants we’ll be overwhelmed with awesomeness and will figure out some way to allocate the subscriptions with your help or just get more. I've been working on a DuckDuckGo Knowledge Base, powered by Assistly, which we have been using to handle feedback emails over the past month or so. It has gone so well that I thought it would be useful to expand to some of their other core offerings, including this Knowledge Base feature.

I've collected over 60 canned responses that I often use in feedback threads. I've also tried to reference relevant duck.co threads when relevant. The idea is to replace our FAQ, tools page and some other odds and ends that people aren't finding easily enough, as well as promote ahead of sending feedback emails, such that common questions may be answered right away.

I've gone through the article names, categories, responses and topic organization a bunch, but I'm sure it could use improvement. I'd appreciate any suggestions, thoughts, ideas for improvement, etc.

It will go through a design overhaul before launch to make it look more like the site. Right now it is just the default template (with a little DuckDuckGo logo).

This new knowledge base is no way is meant to supersede or interfere with duck.co, but instead be complementary.

Reddit gold promotion

I have an idea for a reddit promotion, and I'd love your feedback on it.

We've done reddit advertising in the past, and I think there is a good match up with their user base (including myself!). We were actually in the beta ad program, and it worked great back then. On last try, it has worked a lot less well as I think the ads have become less novelty/more ignorable or something.

Anyway, onto the new idea:
- We sponsor a contest to give away a bunch of reddit gold memberships: http://www.reddit.com/help/gold.
- If someone gets a membership they also get a DDG gold badge (some form of the monicle duck).
- I'm not sure what the contest would be but something involving being an avid user of DDG. Maybe people who have spread it to a bunch of people in interesting ways. Yes, they can lie, but we select among all the applicants the one that have the best stories and that seem real/plausible. Perhaps we can do it in conjunction with the street team stuff and have them take pictures?
- We also promote it on reddit via both the top advertising and the sidebar. That's expensive (especially side bar ad) but I think worth it if we get a lot of reddit exposure and people really invested in spreading DDG.
Thoughts?

Here is the revised results page. It didn't change that much. The biggest change is the background is lighter and matches the new revision of the homepage. The header matches the new logo more as well. Let us know what you think.

Again a good way to mess around with it is to right click and open image in a new tab. Then open the current search engine in another tab and switch back and forth.
