Thanks for another great week, devs! We've also updated the HNSearch instant answer and added a link to Explain xkcd in the xkcd IA. Some other activity and cool things to check out/help with are noted below:
Thanks for all the help this week--the community is actively churning out some really interesting instant answers. Please see below for some activity and issues we'd like your help on.
Tomorrow morning (Thursday 24th July) at 6:30 AM EDT we will be upgrading our Prosody (XMPP) server to require encryption for all server-to-server connections.Read the full story
Here are some updates this week, along with a few ideas that you might like to work on.
One of the benefits of being an open source maintainer is not only do I get to click on the big "Merge pull request" button, but I also get to collaborate with this amazing group of people from who-knows-where to make DuckDuckGo an even better search engine. The community has been growing steadily, and if you're new here, you can join us by diving right into https://duck.co/duckduckhack/.Read the full story

The old goodies page is being replaced by three things: an instant answer, instant answer pages on the community platform, and summary information about instant answer results on the DuckDuckGo results page.Read the full story
I'm very happy that we got a lot of stuff released this week! I can't even list all the changes here, so take a look at https://github.com/duckduckgo/zeroclickinfo-goodies/releases and https://github.com/duckduckgo/zeroclickinfo-spice/releases if you're interested. We're a bit behind on Fatheads, but we'll make sure that we get that repo up to speed!
Please see below for some activity and issues that came up this week. Also, if you haven't had the chance to fill out our dev survey, please do so here. We'll be closing the survey next week, but we'd love to hear from you.
A few weeks ago, we launched the reimagined and redesigned DuckDuckGo. Leading up to the launch was a torrent of excitement, madness, and at least 1000 Asana tasks over the better part of a year. It was a major feat for a staff as small as ours and we're truly proud of our accomplishment. That said, we had some vital (and impressive) help from our community.Read the full story
We've gotten a lot of updates in Spice and Goodies this week! Now that we're getting more and more instant answers, DuckPAN shouldn't require you to install all of the dependencies in a repository. So we've released a DuckPAN update that fixes that issue. Now you can spend less time worrying about dependencies and more time developing instant answers.
We've been doing some general cleanups since we launched the new DuckDuckGo, and we'd appreciate if we get some help with documentation--it's something that's lacking in a few of our instant answers such as Anagram.pm. Here's the activity from this week and things to tinker with:

These past few weeks have been exciting times at DuckDuckGo!
This was a really great week for the community, and we accomplished a lot together. (Check out the stuff that happened in Conversions and Calculator!) Great job, everyone—it looks like we're starting to pick up steam since the launch of the updated DuckDuckGo. We've also been posting these update emails as blog posts every week, and we've created a special section with the latest ones here: https://duck.co/blog/topic/Activity. (You can also get these via RSS.)
We're still looking for feedback on the Codio setup process, and we would love to hear your thoughts.
Yesterday at WWDC, Apple announced that DuckDuckGo will be included as a built-in search option in future versions of Safari on iOS and OS X.Read the full story
It's been a week since the release, and our instant answers have been running pretty well! One thing we've been hearing from you is that setting up DuckPAN can take a bit too long so we've also been experimenting with tools to make that part easier, like Codio. Codio lets you get set up in ~3 minutes and we think you'd enjoy trying out: https://duck.co/blog/codio-duckpan.
At DuckDuckGo, we're experimenting with ways to make developing for DuckDuckHack easier. Our testing tool, DuckPAN, lets you test your instant answers, and it shows you how they would look live on DuckDuckGo. Sometimes, though, it can take a good chunk of time to get up and running.Read the full story
It was a busy week, but the next version of DuckDuckGo is finally out! We're now starting to get back on our feet to focus on pull requests and the DuckDuckHack platform. If you're interested on what's coming up, take a look at https://duck.co/blog/2014-05-duckduckhack-status
