Encryption has been mainstream since Zimmerman won his holy war in the 90s. Log into your bank account with a plain text stream on a public network (the Internet being the largest public network) and let me know how that works out for you in the long run. Truecrypt is the defacto industry standard. Even my mother uses it to store her financial information.

"Darknets" are just proxies, so please rethink your terminology. They are more mainstream than you think, so using "darknet" as a pejorative is not intellectually honest. Besides, the federated services you speak of rely heavily on these so called "darknets" for their backends. That says nothing about the modern censorship and surveillance state, which is beyond the discussion in this thread.

The problem with the federated services you mentioned is not cash, code or publicity (which they have received in massive flurries), its mind share. And there is nothing we can do about that from here.
