I have a large list of topics that I can use for auto-complete that I already use for other things. That part is done, at least version one of it. What's not done is going from there to the interface to get people to use it. Someone suggested using solr for the delivery, but I haven't looked into it enough yet to know if that is a good way to go about it.

I haven't looked at solr too. However, from the top of my head, 2 approaches seem to stand out:
1. Using LIKE queries to search for string prefixes
2. Keep everything in a ternary search tree in memory and make these suggestions very very fast -- assuming that we have a machine with enough memory to keep stuff in memory.
