Perhaps it would be useful to design a filter based on the rowing news source's: Traditional news sites like CNN et el, the networks, etc. Also the news aggregators like Reuter's, Associated Press, etc. The other source would be based on someone's specific field of interest. For me it's science journals and web sites.
Perhaps the most "fluid and real time" would be the gaggle of social media sites. You can use keyword's but if it's "news worthy", look at the number of post on any subject say in the last hour, day... I use that approach to let me know a lot of people are talking about something, a whole lot.
