When set to DuckDuckGo as its HomePage, all browsers seem to not launch the wifi login as the first page, at sights where there is a login page; it hangs; and nada. If there isn't a login page, then no problemo. If I change the browser's HomePage to Google, then, it pulls up login pages just fine.

It's related to the public wifi hijacking your http connections but unable to do so with an https one.

So then what's a reasonable workaround? I can't be the only one,... If I try to use http: it flips it to https: which I expect is what it's supposed to do. Explanations aside, it's [making DDG my start page] isn't working for me. What are others doing?

Interesting... I had a rare opportunity to use public wifi yesterday and had trouble connecting to it, which brought this thread to mind. I then realized that the sites i was trying to visit were all secure (https) sites, so I went to a random non-secure site and got the wifi login screen.

Try using http://ddg.gg as your home page. It's a redirector to https://duckduckgo.com, but since it's non-secure it may be enough to get you to the wifi login screen.
