I am trying to since this is a fresh install (this morning) of Xubuntu 14.04 and Firefox 32.0 it was the first thing I tried as I set my home page, and this is the message I got:

Firefox could not install the search plugin from "https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downl..." because an engine with the same name already exists.

But the Add ons are empty nothing is installed from DDG

Checked about:config and it specifies DDG as the search engine, home page, and new tab Url page.

Should the address be https://duckduckgo.com/ or https://www.duckduckgo.com/?

Can you run a traceroute or mtr from your computer to duckduckgo.com?

CAUTION: This will reveal personally identifying information. don't do this if you feel uncomfortable with that. If you'd rather not post the results publicly we can take this thread private. Just email: ops@duckduckgo.com

thanks for the report :)

I emailed this afternoon to ops@duckduckgo.com the traceroute report Generated from Windows 7. Currently, I am working in Xubuntu Firefox where Google installed itself as the default search engine and knocked DDG out. I still get the same message as I noted below.

I just hope you guys, or gals, duke it out with Google. .... or at least challenge them to a duel.

The addon of this link
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox...
is not working (for me) and gives the same message as if I were to click on the link of the DDG search page. But the post on the above page led me to the
DuckDuckGo Plus 0.4.2 at
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox...
and this installed and replace Google.
I hope this helps.

While I got back the DDG search engine, it still loads very slow. Has anybody looked at the traceroute I emailed to ops?

SOLVED: The end result of the tests is that 2GB of RAM is insufficient to load components fast.
