This is a fantastic idea. One hurdle that comes to mind though: most sport team logos, if you wanted to display them next to the box score, require a licensing agreement due to trademark and copyrights.
This could be easily be overcome in a creative way.
Access to timely stats is another concern since most sports stats providers charge for their services. ESPN has an API but it's only open to "strategic partners" from the look of their docs.

Timely stats has proved to be an issue. There are a host of paid providers, but no free public facing API, unfortunately.
I'm continuing to look into that or to find a way that (legally) gets live scores of games.
Or even just schedules.
