Since I can't edit I will attach this because I felt my nomination post was lacking:
I believe this project is raising the standard of trust online because it creates a censorship resistant and anonymous environment in which people can communicate, share ideas, and content; there is no central authority that you need to trust that could possibly be misplaced it is only you and whoever you decide to share with - nobody else in between that shouldn't be there. Freenet has also been in development for over 15 years and is a huge program that needs the care of a full time developer! Currently their full time developer Xor has been hard at work for the past 2 years improving the official web of trust plugin for Freenet, literally creating trust in an anonymous environment and cuts down on things like spam which are usually a problem in an anonymous environment; he will most likely be be working on this for the next year as well.
