I think this is probably something you'll have to take up with the Chrome support staff or on one of their forums. I'm afraid my expertise is limited to Firefox but after a bit of experimenting in Chrome and searching around in DuckDuckGo, I have a couple suggestions:
If you haven't already, go to DuckDuckGo.com and look for a small popup at the bottom of the page about setting DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. You can also review
this article on various ways of installing DuckDuckGo for Chrome on a desktop
If these fail, you could perhaps try installing the
DuckDuckGo extension for Chrome
. It offers various extra features (including Instant Answers on Google and Bing results pages) and will hopefully add back the search functionality.
I hope these help.
