Having been around for more than a decade, GnuPG sets the standard for trusted open source encryption. As of version 2, it also features a more easily integratable library libgcrypt which has found its use in many applications. While the "web of trust" of PGP encryption has taken some criticism, it remains one of the principal ways in which people learn to trust encryption keys of their peers.
