Is it a bug, or a feature?

Did !enfr previously lead to WordReference? According to https://duckduckgo.com/bang.html it's correct that it goes to Google Translate (English to French).

For WordReference, the bangs currently in use are:

WordReference (!wordreference)
WordReference (!wrpten)
WordReference (!wresfr)
WordReference (!wren)
WordReference (!wresen)
WordReference (!writ)
WordReference (!wr)
WordReference (!wrenpt)
WordReference en->fr (!wref)
WordReference en->it (!wrenit)
WordReference fr->en (!wrfe)
WordReference it->en (!writen)
WordReference English Spanish (!wrenes)
WordReference English-Spanish (!wres)

I'm certain it did. Is there a way to find a public debate regarding the !enfr bang?

Not that I'm aware of. I guess you've got into the habit of using !enfr but !wref seems to be the best one for you now.

Indeed, !enfr did lead to the corresponding WordReference English-French entry before it lead to Google translation. For me, it is not an upgrade : should I miss Google services, I wouldn't be on DuckDuckGo.

Plus, WordReference seems more accurate than Google Translate and offers discussions about words and their translations.

I don't mind using !wref/!wrfe instead of !enfr/!fren but the bangs for translations into other languages made more sense and were shorter ( for instance, !enit instead of !wrenit).

Could we drop the "wr" ? ^^
