why are you wasting my internet traffic checking on my URLs ?

Win7, Firefox 19.0.2, add-on httpfox, DDG search box
When I type a URL into Firefox's address box, you are sending an http request to https://api.duckduckgo.com for every keystroke.
By the time I have completed typing the URL, but before I have hit ENTER, you have already wasted 12 KB of my internet traffic- see screenshot at http://www.peakoil.org.au/screenshot.duckduckgo.gif

Actually it is much worse than 12 KB, because of the overhead of handshaking with the https server over and over again.

Why?
Is there a way to switch this nonsense off?
If not then I'll find something else.

So, what else are you going to find? Same thing happens with the FF search using:
  • AVG Secure Search
  • Bing
  • Google
  • Yahoo
  • eBay
  • Wikipedia
It seems to me that you wasted a lot more of your "internet traffic" testing and complaining about the results.

But WHY?
Is it some kind of "safe search" check?
I have safe search switched off in Firefox and Avast because I don't need it, because I am browsing the sites I manage.

No. It sounds like you have the DuckDuckGo extension, which tries to give instant answers in the address bar.

But I'm not searching anything, I'm typing in the address box.
Is there something other than "the DuckDuckGo extension" which does less checking?

If I switch to Google as the current search engine, and start typing in the address box, not the search box, the same requests are generated to https://api.duckduckgo.com , not Google.

We have other addons available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=duckduckgo&appver=19.0&platform=windows

We'll look into that issue, though!

Firefox > Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > Duckduckgo Plus > Remove > OK
Get Add-ons > DuckDuckGo Lite > Add > OK
It didn't say restart Firefox, but I did anyway.
Firefox > Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > no sign of DDG Lite
Get Add-ons > DDG Lite > Add > "can't do that because an engine of the same name already exists"

Errr, OK, so try the httpfox test again.
Problem solved
Many thanks.

Also, you can disable the address bar answers via the addon preferences.

about:addons   --> ddg preferences --> answers in address bar
