Missing opportunity - Google dropping I'm feeling lucky

Google has started phasing out "I'm feeling lucky" - instead dumping people on their search results page then forwarding them to the first result or simply performing a regular search. Personally I hate this as one of my favourite things about Firefox is having a separate address & search. This allowed me to perform "I'm feeling lucky" in the address bar when I know where I want to go but am too lazy to remember/type in full urls (ie: search for "duck params" is faster than typing in https://duckduckgo.com/params) and still maintain the ability to do a regular search in the search bar.

I immediately went looking for an alternative, and DuckDuck was top of the list, unfortunately other than manually adding \ to every one of my location bar searches there is no way I could find to configure DDG to separate the search functionality between the two fields (or use any of the params/syntax without delving into the search.json file).

DDG's "I'm feeling ducky" is also a bit awkward as it hangs up on redirect blocking in Firefox for a second or two before actually forwarding. Also doesn't get much love: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=I%27m+feeling+...

Since you use FF, you can use the DuckDuckGo Plus extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox... , which provides the I'm Feeling Ducky feature.

Unfortunately it doesn't. It provides regular DDG search in the location bar.

Just so you can see I'm not just daft:

Search done via address bar:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=test&t=ffab&at...

Search done via search bar:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=test&t=ffsb&at...

Neither have the \ required for ducky search

Here's what I'm referring to in the extension:

I just gave this a test and it works for me, having the same effect as adding \ to the search. You just have to use the search box within the extension rather than the browser's search box.

By the way, thanks for the reminder about the extension. I tweeted about it following your post so more people should discover it. And thanks to the OP for raising this!

Hopefully you guys can get things sorted on this front. In the mean time I have found a solution:

Install Keyword Search Addon - https://addons.mozilla.org/EN-us/firefox... Select DuckDuckGo as keyword search, then under DuckDuckGo Features - select I'm feeling Ducky. This allows you to use DDG for "I'm feeling lucky" style searches within the location bar, and your choice of search provider in the search bar. It's a little slow with the redirect issue but better than not having it at all.
