Do we need a custom url?

Some Zoho forums such as this one have their own custom domain(URL) though I wonder whats the point.
I mean we can get to the site on the default Zoho Discussions url or custom.

So do we really need to spend money hosting a Zoho forum on it's own domain?
As I don't see the advantage as the site features are the same as free domain.

So I wonder what other s think.

Well hosting this forum on a custom domain makes it a shorter URL.
Plus search engines are more willing to index sites on their on domain ,than for example-myforum.zoho.com.

So yes custom domain is better.

The primary reason is flexibility. It's pretty clear that the forums won't be hosted by Zoho forever and when the forums are moved to a new service (or are self-hosted) the URL doesn't have to change.

Also, brand identity and professionalism are important, and a long URL with the product name attached to the end doesn't convey the brand name or brand professionalism. Plus, as stated above, the shorter URL is easier to remember.

The cost of a "custom" URL is very small and I'm sure that Gabriel and his team (not "we") knew what they were doing when they decided to pay the small amount of money needed for a custom URL.

Yep the Zoho URL is too long to remember. Much better to have a custom URL. Though you still don't own your site. The only way you have full control is if you are hosting it yourself.

Hi, Guest,

I would not agree with you and would agree with x-15a2. Not custom url is not used because first of all it isn't cool. It would be the same if big companies would all sit on @gmail accounts instead of custom ones or would put their sites on site constructor hostings.

And don't worry you don't have to pay anything for that! ;)

See you,
Kirill

Well on my friends Zoho forum when you tye the www.mysite.com in it goes straight to the site but when you just http://mysite.com the naked domain a warning comes up/
Why is that? Is that to do with Zohos https only system?

Sounds like your friend has the A-record or Cname for their domain pointing to their zoho page. Not quite sure from your wording but that's the most likely case.

Domains are really cheap too, so there's really no reason to exclude having one.

Well the instructions say to make the C Name-customer-discussions.zoho.com
But the problem is that Zoho uses the https protocol instead of http

So when you type in www it's all right but when you type in http://my sit
you get a warning message. As in the image below which BTW is not our site

What mean is that when we type in www.mysite it's all right-NO warning,

But if you type in just http: you get the warning message.

Also many search engines put https:www my site.com in their listings instead of http://www.mysite.com as we have set it up as.

So you see the problem.

That's why we are using our default Zoho URL because it won't work on the custom URL. We get that warning above.

Why does Zoho use https anyway? Blogger does not.
