Different Duck Character Themes a Day

[Old Forum eric.leebow] anonymous
Created: 3 years, 8 months, and 7 days ago
I remember seeing the duck wearing sunglasses one day.  I was wondering if you would be interested in putting sunglasses on him on some days, a hat, or even coming up with different duck themed characters for the holidays.  For instance, during the holidays, the duck could be in the snow or something.

Other search engines have been doing this for some time.

What do you think of this idea?

OK, my current plan is to go with party duck first on 9/25 and link it to http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=315142, which is the HN thread from the DDG soft launch.

I'll make pure vectors of the already existing artwork and a few more based on holidays and random things (I can take a few requests). Then I'll make logos with the different sizes and layouts and upload everything.

Should I name the files in a certain way or use different folders?
posted by [Old Forum mrmagical] • 3 years, 8 months, and 6 days ago Link

I don't want to force the "talent" to do the grunt work, so if you want me to make the logos in the different sizes and what not when I'm ready to deploy, that is totally fine and maybe better anyway in case anything changes. I wouldn't want any of your work to be wasted.

As for naming, whatever you think makes sense. I'd probably give each one its own folder and then eventually all the files that go with them will drop in there.

I've now uploaded vector files for 5 ducks. I fixed them up a bit to look better at higher resolutions.

Love it! Though what I see may be a little off...any chance you could save in a CS2 compatible format? That's what I have :).

Also, will you post smaller versions here like you did for the others? I think people like to see them!

Party duck is perfect for the DDG launch anniversary, which is coming up next month. Then it seems Halloween (Dracula) is after that. Such fun!

I have a few non-holiday duck characters ready, but I don't know when they could be used...

Also, been trying to puzzle together the rest of the Ducky's body from what I imagine it would look like. I assumed that he doesn't wear any clothes except for the bowtie.

Having a picture of the duck doing certain things on some pages would give DDG more personality.

I imagine at the very least they could be used for your 1/3000 idea on the homepage. I also imagine the frequency would be increased a bit as well.

A chance of something between 1/1000 and 1/500 would certainly work too. It shouldn't happen *too* often.

Looks like a chicken to me, but definitely funny.

Can I ask how did you had the idea of the original duck logo (and how did you create it) ?

Thx. My sister created the original logo, and this video. The video was done really quickly--it was a pre-prototype for an idea where the duck explains the search engine.

Originally I was using a photograph of a wood duck. Then I moved to a rubber ducky picture. Then I decided to move to a cartoon character, and gave her some examples of the kind of thing I wanted. And it iterated from there.

Recently my wife took a look at it and revised the border, adding the white circle.

I defenitely have plans to develop the duck character. My version is slightly skinnier and has a few details changed.
When the duck is displayed on a white background, I would suggest a gray border rather than making him gray.

I'll upload a preview once I get home.

I'm not necessarily wed to it or anything. Iterate all you want!
posted by yegg Admin3 years, 7 months, and 22 days ago Link

Here's ducky!

I took what I had already done and made it more similar to the prototype version.
On a white background, the entire body would have that gray outline visible on one of the wings.
I want some quick feedback and then I'll make a final version that'll be ready for use.

Wife commented that maybe the hand waving could be curbed, like perhaps it is good for a waving still but otherwise unnecessary. I could see that. Will also get feedback from my sister and report back.

Now it looks more like a wave (and not like he's presenting something) and has the same shading as the rest of the body (Curbing?).
I'm not sure if the other wing should be curved. I think it looks fine.

Hey Mr Magical,
This is Eve (Gabe's sister). I really love this design! I love the tapered grey shadow, it matches the neck shadow. I like the simplicity of the wings, but you might want to curve them, so if he animates he can be more expressive. . .
I love it!

i like the curve and the shadow. What if the front wing were curved to match the body curve, and the back arm were straight again. Are you working this as a still image, or for animation? If it's for animation, then the bend and straight are both great b/c as you said, one looks like he's presenting an idea, and one looks like a wave, so they're both really expressive.

Now the front wing follows the curve of the body more (which makes it look a lot more natural).
These first images are just a way to get a basic model finished which I can then shape and remix (and the waving is just a way to get an idea of how the wings should look/work).
I'll be doing still images first and then look into making some animation (for something like an introduction video or similar, would like to see suggestions for a script).

Weird duck ideas:

Zero-click Duck - Smart looking, glasses and a book - Done
Privacy Duck - Black silhouette with a white question mark - Done
!Bang duck - Duck with a jetpack - 70%

Goodies duck - I'm thinking... lab? - ?
Less spam duck - Cyborg from the future shooting laser beam at spam can - very crazy

I'd love hearing ideas. They should be fun, but not too crazy.

According to this PDF, ASCII "became the United States character code standard July 5, 1967." On Wikipedia, there is reference to July 7 1967, which is also the "beginning of the civil war in Biafra." Also on Wikipedia, is reference to  June 17, 1963, which is the same day as several other things that are somewhat controversial.

On March 11, 1968, LBJ madated that "All computers and related equipment configurations brought into the Federal Government inventory on and after July 1, 1969, must have the capability to use the Standard Code for Information Interchange..."  I couldn't find anything controversial about July 1. :)

GFDL means that you can use it for ANY purpose (including commercial), provided that you attribute the original creator (in this case, KnowItSome who made the hat.) That's it.

I was kinda lazy when I made that picture, so I used a hat off of the Wikimedia Commons.

And I can't really upload the Adobe Illustrator version, as I made it in GIMP.

logos from events too "regionalized" like those should be displayed only to people from the corresponding countries based on their IP address. It may be annoying to watch logos from events you don't know and don't care about.

If you choose world traveler for that setting, you would get all holidays from all areas.

I think it would be cool if when you clicked on or scrolled over the logo a very tiny window would pop up and give a brief explanation of the holiday or whatever. If it was tied to the regional setting maybe it could be in a different language depending on the regional setting.
