DDG and F-droid

First, excuse my english.

The version of DDG on F-droid is the same that almost 3 years ago!!, I think the newer version should be updated there too! It's very important to support the others free proyects and I'ts even more important if ddg wins with that. We need to demostrate we don't need Google at all, we have to eliminate all these dependencies we have with this evil corporation.

Thank you

We're looking into that, thanks! The version I see on f-droid is unofficial. Ours is open source at: https://github.com/duckduckgo/android

Thank you for answer and the link, but why don't you upload the apk to F-Droid?
posted by alberto.aru 5 years and 3 days ago Link
It's on the list but haven't had time to submit it through other things we're working on. It's already entirely open source, tho, and we make the apk available directly at: http://duckduckgo.com/app/android.apk

(also in the android article: https://duck.co/help/mobile/android)

Any reason to do it sooner than later?

Thank you, I really hate Google and I don't want to use Play Store to download DuckDuckGo. I want to have all FOSS I can on F-Droid to get everybody go away from Google and use better software and if DuckDuckGo isn't there, we can't use it until using a pc.

I don't think it could be "so much work" I mean, it's just upload an apk when gets released any new version.

Duly noted! Definitely on our list!

wow, almost a year using DDG now and I've never know that DDG has an app on android!! I mean come on why didn't you but this on your main page in "more" list? or spread the app a little on popular android sites like XDA?

DDG is great but needs some arrangements in services and !bangs.

It does ask you to install the app at the bottom of the homepage, if you use a mobile browser.

Quote from ramez:
DDG is great but needs some arrangements in services and !bangs.

I'm really not sure what this means -- clarify?

thanks @crazedpsyc I'll summarize my aim in some points:

Purpose: Integrating all DDG services/goodies and apps in Main Page.

1) "As mentioned in my previous comment" in the main page as it's really confusing that when I enter DDG from desktop I don't know about android and iPhone app.
2) !bangs is great but there is a thousand of them which make searching for a specific one really painful WHY didn't just sort them in a graphical way instead of that bangs endless page?! "I could explain more in that point in another comment".
3) Goodies, for the god sake WHY when I press goodies it redirects me to the search page PLUS goodies on the side? why just didn't integrate it on the main page!!
4) Themes, I know that DDG looks cool but where is the customization? also where is DDG for Windows 8 "Touch enabled" design? also as you know world is moving to flat design "Microsoft, Google...etc" so it would be more great to see DDG dressed in pure flat design.

this what got in my mind now maybe I could suggest more later...

1) Understood, and I suppose that's a fair point. I'd never considered looking for things like that from the desktop, but I do not represent the general populace ;-)

2) Definitely agreed. The !bangs page is one of the next things on the list to completely redesign.

3) Now here, I don't know what you mean. https://duckduckgo.com/goodies should show you three columns: categories | goodies in the selected category | example result from the selected goodie; though the last is notably rather slow and doesn't even show a result all the time (also known and on the list).
From what you said, it sounds like you are not seeing that at all?

4) https://duckduckgo.com/settings has three predefined colour themes (under the color tab). In that tab and "Look & Feel," you can customize just about everything however you like it.
I personally can't stand the "flat" (i.e. excess padding/wasted space) design fad... but that's not really relevant.

Above all, one of our design goals is killing the clutter. The homepage is made to be simple and easy to search from, not to flood users with options / other places to go. That's why it only makes links relevant to your current environment readily available.
That said, I do still understand your first point, and I believe that could be solved by a general link like "apps" or "other platforms" under the More menu.

thanks again, to clarify point 3 I mean https://duckduckgo.com/goodies provides the "goodies" itself plus normal search option in the above bar but the main DDG page https://duckduckgo.com provides only search feature, So why didn't just integrate Goodies in the main page instead of making them in a separate link? to make main page have both search and goodies"by kind of drop down list". but I see now that killing the clutter concept maybe against that, right?

Definitely a better concept to have them easily accessible from search. We're thinking about how best to do that.
We wanted to give people an interactive reference tool to explore the instant answers, not so much a quick-reference. Based on the feedback we've gotten, though, I think they're both independently useful ideas.

What is on the main page is specific to your environment. So, if you go to duckduckgo.com from and android device (I used FF in my example) you the the following: [http://snag.gy/Qq4rZ.jpg]

I hope this helps!

sorry but did you see Google's main page design? or even the Unity search in Ubuntu? they mean to go easier by implementing all services in one place, So I don't have to open it in android to know that there is an android version and I don't have to open it in iPhone to know that there is an iOS version!! I want user gets pleased when he opens DDG main page and say "oh yeah there is an android also iPhone app versions...it's a great cross platform search engine!" plus I'm not suggesting more than a link for the app in "more" list.

Sorry, no, I didn't see the pages that you reference. I don't (won't) go to !g and I don't currently run Ubuntu.

The fact is, there are plenty of examples that go both ways, some show all platform offerings, some show what is available for the current user's platform. There's no right or wrong, its a matter of choice.

From the main DDG page, if you click on More\Help\Browsers it take you to this spiffy page: https://duck.co/help/mobile

Personally, I prefer knowing what's available for the environment that I am currently using especially when on a mobile device (phone) because too many choices are hard to choose from with tiny touch points and fat fingers like mine. :)

I believe that I found out about the app by searching for DuckDuckGo in the app store, that's pretty straightforward too.

thanks for your comment, Notifying the desktop user that "there is also an app available for your phone" is a great feature..we are just talking about how to know him that by Directly but an address linking to it in "more" list or making it harder by going deep to help page then "mobile" section.

and you're right searching app-store is straight forward but also I believe if you're a new user and want to try DDG for the first time of course you're not gonna hold your phone and open the store to search for it! you'll play around with the Main Page and that's what I mean Main Page must contain a lot of DDG services/apps to show up why it's great.

I use DDG's android app, but I am not satisfied with design and speed of app, I am looking forward for better version to be released.
