When I install DuckDuckGo extension for Firefox it also installs ad malware called "Websteroids" which I cannot get rid of without re-installing Firefox and doing without DuckDuckGo.

I never had this problem before and cannot find any info. about it on the web.

Is DuckDuckGo a portal to malware? Or is malware somehow piggy backing on the Firefox extension?

DDG never installs anything else like that. I can't imagine how anything would get hooked into the Firefox extension, either.

What makes you think DDG did it, not something else around the same time?
Where is this "Websteroids" - is it a firefox addon? does it load as your homepage? is it a completely separate application?
What operating system are you using?
Where did you get the DDG extension?
