Keeping DuckDuckGo in its present form

In view of the forthcoming "refinements" of the search engine - for those who would prefer to avoid them, is there any way to keep DuckDuckGo in its present form?

Maintaining 2 sites that perform the same function seems like needless repetition. Doing so would require adding\updating Instant Answers and !Bangs for 2 sites. The new site addresses much requested features such as image and video search while retaining (or being in the process of retaining) popular features including the ability for users to configure the results screen to their taste.

While the new version does include a facelift, it's much more than that. There will always be those that don't appreciate change, that is expected with any role-out. What is appreciated is constructive criticism to help satisfy the balance of introducing new features, look and feel while maintaining the functionality of past versions.

Maybe it is possible to add the old theme as an option for people who do not like the new one (I like it, by the way).

We are working on a classic theme.

Great. I hope this will satisfy the OP and others that want to stay with the old DDG.

That's great to hear, the new one looks like another standard Web 2.0 page (no offence).

Also I like to see one thing for the image search:
A little indicator to see if the image is .jpg, .png, .gif etc (main reason why I use Bing for image searches)

That is so corner cut that this should be a browser addon, not something to clutter up the page.

I would caution against maintaining an image of preservation as the more baggage you have to keep the less you can move forward. There may be a vocal minority that may dislike the current layout but when the time comes for you to axe the old interface (and it will come) it will only be met with more distate.

yeah I love the new version but the classic one looked better in my opinion. :O I am giving the new one a go, but the happy green button was better. ^.^

It is not that I don't like change and I'm all for it. I just like the old version because it seemed more bubbly. ^_^ lol

So why not just freeze it with no updates?

How much effort would that be?

I would love to go back to Google c. 1990’s to see if was as good as I remember it.

I believe it would be a security risk to have an unmaintained version of the website.

I wonder how the BBC do it?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5741...

Exactly how many security issues can there be in website that doesn’t ask for personal details and doesn’t track you. What are the hackers going to steal?

If it is all too much for DDG why not make it open source, put it in the public domain and let someone else maintain it?

Here you go: Google from 1998: https://web.archive.org/web/199811111845...

Have fun with that! :)

Thanks for that, I got all nostalgic.

Unfortunately it’s only a snap shot of the page; the search behind it doesn’t work.

I like the new layout (and pictures!), but what happened to the "Try this search on..." that used to be off to the right? That's how I learned some of the most useful !bangs that I use today.

Not sure if they are coming back or not, but did you know that !Bangs are now exposed via autosuggestion when you start your search entry with a ! ? Give it a try and let us know if it's a good solution for you.

Thanks!

It's nice getting to see all the !bangs like that as opposed to the old trial-and-error. It's not quite as good, but certainly better than nothing.

This was the recently posted, recently deleted comment. Like Google, DDG seems to want to trap you into continuing an association with them as you cannot post a comment saying you're done, then delete your just-created account as part of said being-done. Even having to create an account to contact/feedback is Google-like.

I stopped using DDG with the change to the "What's Next?" mobile format and went back to Bing (which I was still using anyway for image searches). The "More" page and all its handy tools is gone (because forcing people to search for them means more searches), plus the info pages on how and why to use DDG. The logo is also inferior. #BFA

I tried to get around it by saving the page on my i-Phone, but Apple f**ked me, of course and lost it when I tried to put it a link on the home screen. I'm not sure I could've dealt with the results page, anyway, with it being the mobile format.

I read here that there may be classic version in the works, but if you didn't want to lose users, that should've been in place beforehand – once people move on/back to somewhere else, they're essentially lost for good, with little no or little way to notice subsequent, actual improvements. (I'm here now because I'm cleaning bookmarks.) Of course, the literal trick is that while advocating it, those who stay become acclimated to the new status quo, so there's no point in doing anything about it. This is how f-book seems to operate, and "Gügl" copied them (it certainly was when they removed un-signed in Options from their Search home page, and eliminating Classic e-mail for their "NūLük" when I dumped them).

If DDG ("DəkDəkGō," now) wants to be The UnGoogle™, you might stop trying to look like and behaving like them.

Maybe I am easily pleased but I have now been using DDG in Aviator Browser for some time and it beats the pants off of all the other well known and not so known browsers and search engines. It is lightening quick even though I am still on old copper gets me what I want every time ,never lets me down . Compare it with Google which many people here compare it with. Google takes you to paid for sites IT thinks you should go to limits your range by repeating same websites on every page and tracks you . I hope those who love Google realise that a new way of tracking you is coming out because of business complaints to Google against people like me who have automatic deletion of all cookies called AdID which will track you over ALL Google networks including Google + Google G-Mail and your cellnet phone and doesnt use cookies. They say they will bring out a new system that the NSA/GCHQ cant hack-Wrong ! its already being panned on the net. so,sorry my opinion of Google is the pits . I LOVE DDG and no I dont work for them.
