Where'd the dropdown go?

Since we launched the DuckDuckGo redesign, we've been getting questions about the dropdown menu (image 1) that used to be next to the search box. I'd like to clarify the most common questions raised with a quick post:

The dropdown only served as a way to let people discover our !bang commands. Unfortunately, it didn't do a great job of explaining how !bangs work or that there aren't just 9 !bangs, there are closer to thousands! :)

The redesign of DuckDuckGo introduced auto-suggest (which you can disable in the Settings menu) but our version of auto-suggest is special in that it contains !bang auto-suggest as well. That means, at any point while you're typing, you can add an exclamation point to your search and be shown a list of available !bang options (see images 2 and 3). This lets you more easily discover !bangs since any combination of letters will reveal !bangs that match (like in image 3).

So, to clarify, the dropdown menu was just a tiny sample of all the !bangs available to you. We're going to be making more improvements to !bangs and how you interact with them so we're looking forward to your ongoing feedback. Also, if you want to submit your own !bangs or fix a broken !bang, just use this form: https://duckduckgo.com/newbang

Tl;Dr You can get a better version of that same dropdown simply by typing an exclamation point, '!' (like in image 2)

Also, many of those services are now available on DuckDuckGo:

oh, that's great! thanks so much. this actually will be even more useful than the old dropdown. :)

(also thanks for that super-fast response - you don't see that very often.)

Hey, I know this post has a couple of months, but I just wanted to know, why is that, when I'm using the exclamation mark ! and start typing the name of the bang (i.e. !Iconarchive) I get more than 1 result, and I want to "add" a given result of the two available (!Iconarchive instead of !Iconarchivecc), my natural instinct is to click on the bang I want, and continue typing what I want to search (firefox icons), but instead of just adding the bang, DuckDuckGo just takes me to the page the bang came from (Iconarchive.com), I rather just DuckDuckGo let me continue typing instead of the redirection, and I don't seem to find any option to handle that behavior. Anyway, just a heads up.

I believe that is because !bangs are also used to surf to that website, using DDG as a proxy. e.g. It is now a habit to write !yt and press enter to go the YouTube instead of typing youtube and pick youtube.com from the history, since the history might show a particular video I just watched, while many would prefer the youtube main page by !yt bang. Hope this explains.
