I like it too. I am thinking about how to do that but I don't see any API to send queries to the usda website. I guess I'll have to get the database (1Mb) and look into it.
I never wrote goodies before so someone may have a better suggestions?

There are several distributors of the USDA's data out there. Nutritionix.com is one which has a json api suited to this. FatSecret.com does as well but their api seems to me more geared towards personal nutrition tracking apps. However, I didn't look at it in too much detail.

Why is this topic still open? Are there gaps with this ? I am a developer and I can help.

Also I like myfitnesspal is a source for food calories and i think their database is quite comprehensive.

Also see, http://world.openfoodfacts.org/. They have more data for popular brands (31361 foods at the moment).

This currently works for calories but not other nutritional facts. Further work on other aspects of nutrition would be valuable.
