Search for a food, and then, find its nutrition facts, like vitamins, and minerals.

I like it too. I am thinking about how to do that but I don't see any API to send queries to the usda website. I guess I'll have to get the database (1Mb) and look into it.
I never wrote goodies before so someone may have a better suggestions?

There are several distributors of the USDA's data out there. is one which has a json api suited to this. does as well but their api seems to me more geared towards personal nutrition tracking apps. However, I didn't look at it in too much detail.

It seems someone has implemented this already via nutritionx

Why is this topic still open? Are there gaps with this ? I am a developer and I can help.

Also I like myfitnesspal is a source for food calories and i think their database is quite comprehensive.

This currently works for calories but not other nutritional facts. Further work on other aspects of nutrition would be valuable.
