If we type "places to eat" we get a list of restaurants maybe around 5 mile radius that are open.

Not to take away from this idea but I have made a site like this:
http://www.hoursofops.com. Its a responsive web app that gets your gps coordinates from HTML5 Geolocation and gives you restaurants in your area and what time they close.

Also, if you need a source to work on this, it would be https://developers.google.com/maps/docum...

Wouldn't a site like yelp be ideal? They have an API, but you have to request access to it.

We currently have a yelp integration but this idea is an expansion around the same idea: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=black+lab+bist...

You could pull data from Open Street Map (http://www.openstreetmap.org) which has a nice API (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/API).

For displaying a map (if required), MapBox (http://www.mapbox.com/) looks nice (unsure if it's free or not though).
