I think that single word translations with a keyword of, say, translate "Hello" into French would be quite useful for the DDG community.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that their API is free to us...We might have to a request or something.

We previously had a single-word translation Spice. It was never updated for the redesign so if someone wants to tackle that, it could be revived. The problem with the API was that it was very limiting in terms of the input and output languages -- they needed to be explicitly mentioned and so the translation Spice quickly became complicated as we needed to first detect the language of the input string if it wasn't already given. If anyone knows of a really good (free) translation API that would be ideal.

I had previously investigated the Microsoft Bing API but it cannot be used as it because it requires authentication headers which a Spice cannot set. It's possible that the Spice code could be improved to allow that though...

Do you try with Zanata: translate.zanata.org?

Thanks for the suggestion, I gave them a quick look but I don't believe they offer a translation API. It seems they only provide a web based tool that lets others provide translations for a given text. Doesn't look like Zanata will work for this use case.
