The Craft Beer market is just getting bigger:

http://www.cnbc.com/id/101435252

Potential search behaviors and their corresponding http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/ end point might be:

Trying to find or travelling to:

brewpubs in boston - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/locations
wisconsin breweries - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/locations
craft beer in san antonio -http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/locations
where is Stone Brewing - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/breweries (premium access)
(as an aside, http://api.untappd.com/v3 seems like it would be a useful resource under this behavior, especially regarding local searches and the way they have hooked up with foursquare)

Learning generally:

what is weissenbock - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/styles
how bitter is an ipa - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/styles
who brews a gose - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/beer/:beerId...
citra hops - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/hops

This is really good, what is it:

heady topper - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/beers
what is in heady topper - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/beer/:beerId...
hops in hill farmstead edward - http://api.brewerydb.com/v2/beer/:beerId...

Ratings:

Pretty much off the table. The two national brands that compile this, RateBeer and BeerAdvocate, are very protective of their user-generated ratings.

With some insight and thoughts as direction, it would be cool to settle on an initial answer to address, a foundation to iterate on. Then the fun part: coding!

Cheers :)

We'd love to get multiple developers working together on this if possible. BreweryDB has tons of data and there are several possible Instants Answers which can be made using their data as the description above explains.

If there are any beer advocates who are interested in working on some Beer related Instant Answers please let us know. @rHoover has offered to lead and manage the development of these IA's with the help of any developers willing to lend a hand. So who's with him?!

I would love to get involved and help out however I can! I've been looking for a good opportunity to get involved. What better way than one that involves beer

This is great! I'm glad to see we have some willing volunteers!

Is anyone particularly interested in tackling one of the types of IA's describe above? Have any ideas for other answers? Any different sources? Do you guys like what @rHoover has outlined? Is there anything missing?

Let's get some discussion/brainstorming going!

The brewerydb api was also updated recently:

One of the updates was adding the /beer/random and /brewery/random endpoints.

Maybe we could start with one of these?

Fantastic guys! With your patience I'll share some thoughts for you to think about.

I am biased, but the "beer tourism" type of queries may be the easiest place to start:

If you currently query "brewpubs in boston", the Places IA kicks in with the OSM and Yelp info presented. This tells me that some of the moving parts for this type of query response already exist, primarily DDG's connection to OSM which makes for a fantastic presentation within a detail pane. Plus, I think I remember seeing that the response from the /locations endpoint at breweryDB contains lat/lon coordinates!

The down side to this avenue is there may be more work involved in solving this seeming conflict!

Regarding the "beer education" type of query, I haven't found anything else that presents this info as quickly and painlessly as an IA would, so new and novel is a win:

I also have, and am willing to contribute, an official list of beer styles already typed up that could perhaps be really handy for a triggers.txt sort of use.

Any gut reactions out there? Thanks!!

Just as an aside, if anyone has an urge to dig around in the guts and structure of breweryDB's returned .json, be aware that the firm does not respond to ajax requests from your javascript :(. Policy.

I built a *working* prototype for random beers using the brewerydb api. Does anyone want to sync to talk about this series of IA's?

A wrapper in Perl to query their servers, similar to the other languages? Huge step forward! A discussion would be great!

Still interested, I got pretty busy there for a while. Let's sync?

Beer style instant answers would be great! There's some great info on a bunch of styles here: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/

Love the beeradvocate.com bang, btw!

rHoover seems to be absent as of late.

I am going to start working on this instant answer, if someone would like to collab with me, post here and we can get in touch!

It seems like DDG already handles "Beer styles" somehow:

(interestingly enough, only fired with "Beer styles", not "beer styles")

But it would be awesome to have something more robust, showing particular information about the style.

@loganom, are you still interested, I'd love to help

Sure thing, at the quack and hack event today i'll start a branch on my github and post it here so we can collab easier. Still interested, yes! Just haven't had a great amount of free time lately.

Life has lots of surprises. It didn't really happen that day. I'll reply later today, thinking that a "random beer" is a good start with this api
