The Sunlight Foundation has a great API (http://data.influenceexplorer.com/api) with tons of up-to-date information about campaign finance — running totals for a given politician, breakdowns of contributions by industry, organization, etc. Any interest in this? I'm starting to work on it... It's something I'd love to be able to get a zero-click summary of.

And while I'm thinking of it... do any existing DDG Spice plugins make multiple API calls before generating an info box? To do this without pre-generating a table with a large number of politicians and their associated Sunlight IDs, I'd need to call their API once to do a search by name, and then a second time (or more, if I wanted to retrieve more types of data) to pull out more detailed campaign contribution aggregates.

If that's not supported, at least a nice big total contributions to date would still be an interesting number...

There's already a pull request in. I just need to get in and make some more tweaks.

Hi Almanackist,

We'd love to have a spice like this. We do have a capability for multiple API calls from a spice, but it is not currently public. However, if you send me an email at dylan@duckduckgo.com, I'd be happy to work with you on this. I'm an intern at DDG and my github username is nospampleasemam.

Thanks!

We do have some internal plugins that make multiple calls, but generally we try to stay away from it because it can be slow.

Another approach that allows unlimited calls is to pre-process the data and make a fathead plugin for queries like

x contributions

It is less flexible on the trigger but allows lots of processing.
