e.g. searching for "Half Life 2" would show relevant info as an instant answer. Reviews, synopsis, player count, etc.

I'm trying to pull a new game information spice using GiantBomb - https://github.com/duckduckgo/zeroclicki...

Thanks for the heads up, Tom! I'm personally looking forward to this being the handiest IA yet :)

Looks like GiantBomb only returns 1 game per API call so this probably won't work long-term. Any other great sources out there with a more flexible API?

how about the Twitch API? https://github.com/justintv/twitch-api A search for a game could yield a list of current live streams?

I love Twitch! Makes previewing games a lot easier than watching videos and waiting for the gameplay footage!
Definitely a good suggestion, if not for this, then in general a Twitch instant answer. Feel free to create a separate idea for that.

Have you looked into archive.vg? They have an API and seem to have a lot of good info about games.

They've got a really expansive API but seem to be lacking key details for recent big studio games like Battlefield 4 and COD ghosts. They've got really good details for the retro games though!

How about Metacritic API?

From what I've read in the past, metacritic ratings don't exclude unverified accounts--so it obscures the rating when people come in to troll it. Any insight on that?

There's an unofficial IGN API on Mashape which returns rating, platforms, title, publisher, description, and thumnail.

Hmm, not sure IGN would appreciate the use of the unofficial API (seems like it's scraping) and might end up getting shut down.

There's also the possibility of using the Gaming Wikia as a source for this. It covers some more game-specific stuff than plain Wikipedia
