a reply to a comment on the General Rambling Safe search should filter bad language 4 years and 5 months ago
Perhaps another filter that is disabled by default called SafeWords. It would remove pages containing the f-word or such language. This would be for parents who don't want there children seeing this stuff normalized or for people (like me) who just don't want to see it themselves. This would only be page-specific.
a reply to a comment on the General Rambling How retain the websites I visit, so I can not open them again by mistake? 4 years and 5 months ago
DuckDuckGo cannot maintain any of your search/visit history (see the privacy policy), however, you can find some ways to get your browser to do so instead.

When your computer gets slow, see if you can delete just cookies, instead of all history. If you tell me what your browser is, I may be able to give you instructions on this.

Similarly, you can change your browser settings so that it only accepts cookies from sites such as DDG.

Your browser will often get slow for other privacy/scripts related reasons. Check out my post on https://duck.co/forum/thread/13156/so-us... listing some add-ons you can get.

Hope this helps.

People use DDG for (maybe) three main reasons:
- No tracking; DDG doesn't track you (https://duckduckgo.com/privacy)
- Instant Answers; DDG has Instant Answers that give you answers immediately
- Good design; As you pointed out, DDG has good design

(Also, I use DDG because it's awesome).

DDG filters results in three cases:
- If it's "Adult" and SafeSearch is enabled (this can be disabled at https://duckduckgo.com/settings)
- If it's a "content-mill" meaning it's from a website that churns out low-quality information
- If DDG doesn't now about it; DDG doesn't have the money to crawl as much of the web as Google or Bing (DDG does use Yandex and other search indexes, but those are way smaller than Google's)

Usually however (unless you're searching really super-obscure or for something "Adult") DDG is great.

a reply to a comment on the General Rambling Option to show search result urls that use HTTPS only? 4 years and 5 months ago
I've been hoping for an HTTPS icon for a bit: https://duck.co/forum/thread/11543/wot-h.... I think it's necessary for the privacy of the users to know if the link they're clicking is HTTPS, but without having to mouse-over it.

Sorry, I forgot to add: these problems also happened on iOS8 Safari. I could only get screenshots with Firefox though.

True. (DDG of course gives you Instant Answers, but the general public doesn't know that).

I like the idea of "search the web on incognito mode" but I think it needs to sound a bit better. (The reference to Google Chrome always irks me; Firefox had Private Browsing first!)

Love the ideas,

I think that's just the About IA (which takes the top paragraph and sidebar information from Wikipedia). However, it shows that in some cases the author info is there (you can see it as "Author -- Joseph Conrad" on the About IA).

However, as <hidden> pointed out, GoodReads would probably be the best API.

Hi,

I've added some screenshots of what DDG looks like on phones. I'll point out problems by screenshot.

First of all, the About IA shows almost no information on phones (eight words in this case) yet it takes up most of the screen. It really needs to show more of the first paragraph on the initial view. Perhaps there could be a Details button to get all the stuff that's on the sidebar on Wikipedia (like slogan and type of site).

Also, the header seems rather crowded. It might be better if the logo was taken out (I think the orange bar across the top is enough to tell a frequent user that they are on DDG.

In the second picture, as you can see the tag-line overlaps the controls.

In the third picture, the settings seem rather long and meaningless (especially to a phone user).

Finally in the last picture, the different menus are not on one line and the word settings seems rather useless (it simply pushes the actual settings lower on the page).

I got these shots using responsive design mode on Firefox (CTRL-SHIFT-M).

Cheers,
MyUser
