a reply to a comment on the General Rambling Firefox Add-On Install Fails 4 years and 6 months ago
I installed the search plugin about a year ago, before the graphical revamp. This means I have an old logo, which I would like to change. I tried deleting the search plugin and installing the new one but it kept telling me it already existed. I tried restarting Firefox with it uninstalled to see if that helped, but it still thought it was around. I can't remember what I did to it after that, but now, when I look at it, it's the old one still.

Is there anything bad with the old one, other than the logo?

Instant Answer, those boxes at the top that tell you things. So much better than clicking on results. :D
a comment on the General Rambling Square Root And Other Math Questions 4 years and 6 months ago
Hi,

Searching for "square root of 25" returns the square root of 25. Unfortunatly, "what is the square root of 25" does not.

In conversions, I can't seem to get it to convert anything from or to cubitts. Also, there doesn't seem to be any fortnights.

I was thinking it would be cool if a conversion for "100 meters to kilometers," it would say "0.1 kilometers" then below "1 meter = 0.001 kilometres.

Finally, back to "square root of 25." As you can see in my screenshot, it isn't truly obvious what the answer ("5") is.

Cheers,

There is a singal to noise problem with this. The more ads there are, the more noise there is, but, because of the annoying non-relevancy of many Bing ads, the same or less signal. I think users would just stop looking at the ads (ceartainly they'd look at them less because they were out of the way, to the right) and this would generate less revenue for DDG.

It would be nice though if you could set the positions of ads in the settings as well as the max (or even min) number of ads. Some people (probably weirdos like me) would like ads (clearly labled) sprinkled throughout their search results, just to see what it was like. Some, like you, might want them on the right. Some might want two at the top, or seven at the bottom, or, as DDG already provides, no ads at all.

I also would like to filter my ads, mostly to avoid ones from pronto.com (although this would remove the hilarity of finding "atomic weapons on pronto.com. Low, low prices.")

If you want to change your region permanently, go to Settings (https://duckduckgo.com/settings) and change your Region setting (right at the top).

There's a small icon labled "Region" to the top right of the results. Click it and select a country from the list that pops up. It can then be disabled and enabled using the switch that will appear next to the icon.

Cheers, and good luck.

If this was ever done, it would be best not to go where Google has gone with an ad at the top (like where DDG's is right now) AND ads down the side (and sometimes even ads at the bottom). It makes it feel like the search results are surrounded and DDG should never do this.

I personally liked the look of the two ads at the top and how DDG did that without taking up more space. However, I believe that an ad should never push a search result down farther than one search result so ads on the side would be the way to go if DDG increased ads above 2.
a reply to a comment on the General Rambling WOT/HTTPS Everywhere 4 years and 6 months ago
I am only suggesting an expansion of the locations where WOT icons would be seen if the user has WOT icons enabled (such as next to image titles, ads and official sites) so that the user who has WOT enabled has the convenience of it accross the site. I agree that WOT, as a biased, human-based service, is not perfect (and if DDG offered it's own, similar service, I would prefer it) but it is useful in the decision making process.

HTTPS is not biased (either it's HTTPS or it's not) so that, at least would be an improvement, even if it were simply added to the search result. And, most likely, it would be like WOT and toggleable.

I did. However, I think it would be nice if WOT icons were beneath Official Sites, Ads and image result page URLs as well, along with HTTPS icons beneath all HTTPS links.
a reply to a comment on the General Rambling What if duckduckgo looked like this...! It could be for April Fools Day! 4 years and 6 months ago
Checkout https://duckduckgo.com/?q=bing+april+foo...

Also remember that going to duck.com redirects to google.com. I think some users are probably already seing clownish colours on what they expect to be DDG's homepage (and all DDG had to do was stick it's neck out).
