After having a look for a while, the best source I could find was CNET. They have a JSON(P) format available, and we could search for software in the web browser category sorted by download count and filtered to free browsers only, then filter the results accordingly.

I found a source! OpenFooty have an API for player stats. They support JSON too, but unfortunately the API keys take a while to obtain and I can't find a way to search the players.

They are a bit obscure to be the primary source but it would be cool if they showed up in the video spice!

Welcome to the community!
Goodies are always being developed and sources are always being added and updated! You can always suggest a new source for a goodie on this part of the forum. There are already DDG doodles for holidays, anniversaries and world events, which are all pretty awesome! Sadly, the order of the doodles is a bit donked up and in the wrong.
Also, this is wrong forum section, this part is for specific ideas for instant answer ideas, but suggestions etc are more than welcome in the General Ramblings section you can click near the top of the page!

Linux is much more customisable than Windows and Mac thanks to it's UNIX inspiration and most distros are open-source so you can always check for yourself is there's any malicious code. Also, most distros have package managers that you must install everything from. These package managers are mostly community-maintained and open-source and so have very good methods of ensuring software is legit and secure, such as Debian's APT and Arch Linux's pacman.
a reply to a comment on the Instant Answer Idea We need some real movie trailer IA that just works. 4 years and 7 months ago
They're not always relevant - especially when obscure / slightly older movies are buried. E.g. when searching for 'hobbit trailer video' the original is buried by trailers of the sequels. Similarly, if you search for 'indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull trailer video', the movie itself and various fan / spin-off trailers show up - the first trailer I found was a page into the results. With an IA the relevant trailers (mostly hosted on Youtube anyway) could be shown to end-users instantly without them having to filter through youtube results or explicitly type 'videos'. They could even use the release year to filter the trailers.

Apparently, you have to make 2 API calls to obtain the movie trailers from TheMovieDB, with seperate steps for searching and getting the trailers. Both require an API key to be fed to them. Anyone know how this could be worked around? TheMovieDB API

If you search for "harry potter and the deathly hallows part 1 trailer" it shows an extract from wikipedia about Part 2's release. Similarly, if you search "hobbit desolation of smaug trailer" nothing shows up! These are just some examples I tried out of interest.
