DuckDuckGo hires exclusively from community contributors so the reason could be a lack of women actively participating in the community. In that case, I wonder what we can do to encourage more female involvement.

Not as far as I'm aware at the moment.

To make this a reality, I'd really like to be able to set up or request specific language-specific sub-forums. DDG staff, any chance or plans for this?

This is happening because backslash "\" is a !bang that automatically directs you to the first search result, which in this case is Yahoo Answers. See a quick explanation on the !bangs page.

However even searching for just "sqrt 169" doesn't trigger the square root Instant Answer so I've filed an issue here: https://github.com/duckduckgo/zeroclicki...

I just checked and you're right - Firefox Mobile has this setting as well. Thanks for the hint!

The tracking protection feature seems to be pretty unknown but apparently will be part of the Preferences UI from Firefox 39.

I think you're referring to the Do Not Track feature and you're right - it's optional for websites to respect and a lot of them ignore it.

However the tracking protection option is a separate setting and uses a blacklist to block tracking URLs, so the user is in control.

Well that's strange — I don't get Japanese results and I live in Japan! Changing the region to USA, Japan, or anything else doesn't seem to affect the search results for the "yahoo" query. I'd suggest filing a relevancy bug and linking to your forum post:

Although not directly related to DuckDuckGo this is a cool Firefox privacy feature that's quite hidden.

1. Type
Code:
about:config
in the address bar.
2. Search for
Code:
privacy.trackingprotection.enabled

3. Double-click it to set it as true

This uses a comprehensive blacklist from Disconnect to block lots of trackers (and potentially speed up page loads). More info here:

Thanks for the pointer x.15a2 - and sorry for not searching first.

As x.15a2 says, it could be that your browsing history is being saved (default behaviour). Other things could be search suggestions, which can be turned off in Firefox in Preferences -> Search.

Also, it might help to switch off search queries displaying in URLs by going to DuckDuckGo advanced settings -> Privacy -> Requests shown in url (turn off and save). Note that this only affects searches made from the DuckDuckGo website - not searches from the browser address bar or search bar.
