Hi duckduckian,

Thanks for the ideas and designs. I'll pass these on to the design team.

For the app instant tabs, I'm not entirely show how they work. Does the user have to press something or do they appear automatically when you open the app?

Hi duckduckian.

That's a good idea - I've not seen that before. I'll forward it to the design team.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Good work. Just thought I'd mention that for more discussion, there's an interesting thread on Hacker News: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=114...

Thanks for the question.

For people using these Instant Answers, they are generated on our servers with a small amount of JavaScript for displaying, so CPU usage and caching storage should be not much more than regular DuckDuckGo search result pages.

For developers creating these Instant Answers, we've worked with Codio to offer all contributors free access to their service which is an online development environment. Because of this, developers don't need to install a server or framework - it's all handled in the Codio web app.

Hi. Indeed, it would be good to have Instant Answers like this localized for both the queries and answers but we'd like to do this for all Instant Answers which is a big project. There's no timeline but it's something we plan to look into. A bit more info is here: https://github.com/duckduckgo/zeroclicki...

I've just tried looking through the settings in Firefox 45 but the custom search engine link just goes to the Mozilla Addons site, so I don't think custom URLs are possible :-(

Hi. As x.15a2 says, there are two possible options: Cloud Save or URL parameters in a bookmarklet.

For the URL parameters, yes, you'd have to go to the URL each time unless your browser allows you to set a specific URL as the default search engine.

So the other option is Cloud Save, accessible from the settings sidebar, which requires a password to save and restore settings. If you use private browsing and cookies are deleted each time you close the browser, then you'd need to enter the password each time you start the browser and use DuckDuckGo. However, this is saved for the duration of the browser session so even if you closed the DuckDuckGo tab (and not the whole browser), your settings would still be active.

Apart from this, the only other technical possibility would be for search engine settings to be stored as part of the browser settings, but I don't know of any browsers that have this functionality.

Thanks for the suggestion. You're right, our results come from a variety of sources and because of various syndication rules, we can't freely redistribute them as an API.

However, a DuckDuckGo API does exist which contains access to some of the Instant Answers that make up our results: https://duckduckgo.com/api
