a reply to a comment on the General Rambling Will google maps (or any maps) ever be thrown in zero-click? 8 years and 10 months ago
Absolutely, right now at http://duckduckgo.com/?q=555+N.+Wilson+St.Chicago,+IL You'll see I'm actually detecting that it is an address and making the first link a link to the Google map. It would be trivial for me to replace that with the map embed, but I just haven't spent time thinking about the best UX for that. That is, how big? Should it be in the sidebar instead?

I imagine at the very least they could be used for your 1/3000 idea on the homepage. I also imagine the frequency would be increased a bit as well.

As for full body, check out http://duckduckgo.com/duck.mov

What do you think?
a reply to a comment on the General Rambling Sidebar ideas 8 years and 10 months ago
In general, I'm going to start rethinking a lot of the site-wide design, and would love your continued ideas (off-the-wall or otherwise).

As for the sidebar, the reason for it there (as opposed to on top) is to put less clutter between the search box and the results. On bigger monitors the sidebar can be off to the side and forgotten about (or turned off) if never used. That is harder if it is right by the box or in between the box and the results. That said, I'm really open to moving/changing/destroying it, etc., but I'm going to think about it a bit holistically so it might be a little while.

We should move this to a new topic too.

Have you figured out yet why Google shut down your account? That's crazy (and of course super super annoying). Wow, that would piss me off to no end.

> old favicon

This will be fixed shortly. I just crawled a new 6 million of them and thinking of also moving to an api that serves them and keeping mine as backup.

> select/unselect zero-click.

I'm having trouble reproducing this. What browser/OS?

> sidebar

Love these ideas. However, I'm currently exploring high level the purpose/functionality/usefulness of the side bar, and so want to wait on messing with it a lot until I figure that out.

Maybe the new thread should be first on if it should exist at all, and if it should, what should be on there.

That said, completely agree on the hanging feel and the background just didn't occur to me. What do you mean about the zero-click info & multiple meanings message? Do you mean somehow putting those into the sidebar?

As for icons, interested in what sets you like more. Also, why do you think it is better to insert as background images (just wondering)?

Do you actually use this site for search? I'm trying to only add sites people actually use :) (at least one).

Thx!  This interview has been by far my favorite to do--so much fun.

I actually have a few regional bangs in the UK region after getting several requests for them, but building them out across the board is very time consuming. But I'll add some google ones on the next update.
a reply to a comment on the General Rambling DDG Logo Discussion 8 years and 10 months ago
Here are my current thoughts.

Old logo
-- Like duck part; don't want to change it.
-- Century Gothic (old font) was at one point pervasive throughout the site, but now this is its only place left, so it could use an upgrade.
-- Like how it maintains some professionalism with the logo. I actually get a lot of complaints the site is too childish, and this really helps it I think. In case you never saw it, this was the old old logo.

New Green
--Don't see much difference on my laptop (can tell more on my desktop w/ big monitors).
--Agree that if it is bolder, lighter makes more sense.
--So good with this change.

Font
--Would like to see some mockups with those other fonts.
--The Futura one looks pretty good, but is too stretched vertically.
--Like the curvature on the 20th cen. but agree there is something less clear about it.
--Like the bubble font, but think it is too childish given we're already pigeonholed in that area.

Red text
--Think by itself it looks pretty good, but with the logo it seems too much and takes away some of the professionalism. Still prefer black.

Here's another one to add to the mix from someone else. I wonder what everyone thinks about it?

Accompanying notes: "play[s] up the whimsical aspect of the DDG brand, and to me that means playing with slightly bolder design elements and, in general, having more fun. Using red lettering makes logo and the text appear as one cohesive unit."
