Hi Frank, yes the API is not for the full search results. I have plans to overhaul that page and make it all more clear.

The API is just for the 0-click info, e.g. essentially answering the question what is X. The reason why it doesn't involve the whole search results is that I syndicate a lot of APIs and I'm not allowed to put them into an API.

Would be cool, but isn't happening in the foreseeable future :)

This is why the API exists :)

I actually try to bubble them to the top when I see them. Are there particular pieces of information that you think makes sense for 0-click?

It's actually a hybrid, and so we do our own crawling and indexing as well. Here's a few things to try.

1) Is it faster at http://ff.duckduckgo.com/ ? This server is on Amazon. The main servers are actually not on Amazon, though they have a direct fiber connection so they should be fast. All servers (including Amazon) are on the US east coast. Most people on the East Coast comment how fast it is (often faster than Google), but outside the US there can be a lag.

2) Is it faster for disambiguation pages, e.g. http://duckduckgo.com/?q=test ? That page is all from our own index.

Speed has actually always been a priority, and something I take very seriously. I use nginx modules directly already and do a lot of other things, but first I want to nail down your particular issue. Are you outside the US? All the servers are in the US, and that could cause the issue; in fact, it is the most common one by far.

A lot of good stuff here--thx. Finding good provider/APIs/databses is often the barrier, and then time.

--nutrition: this is in there now via WolframAlpha, e.g. http://duckduckgo.com/?q=calories+2+eggs. I'm not sure I understand the conversion request, but that should be also be able to be handled by WA. If you show me some queries, I could try to get them to work.

--wikia: I actually have a lot of the biggest ones already indexed into 0-click already; about 20 of them I think. If there are particular ones you're thinking about, just let me know.

--thumbnails: I started adding them to the right of search results via the embed.ly API. I'll ping them about comic sites. I wonder though, are people finding these useful?

--parts & models: I was planning on doing this via the Amazon API. I presume they cover most of the kind of things you're searching for?

--compiler/cpu: can you give some examples here?

--music samples: like this. But how would it come up; when you search for a song name?

--financial data: oft request and something I need to do. I may pull this in from WA. Is the data they provide satisfactory?

It is in a pretty tight form, i.e. the images are small and the snippets are short. What do you get out of having it even more compressed? The idea with the list is that you can use it as is or you use it to explore/browse in related topics, and in both cases I think the images/snippets add to those goals.

I didn't realize that--lame! Yeah, this makes a lot of sense then.

Do you mean on the DDG homepage or a DDG widget on iGoogle?
